These Woods, Leah Brown. This Sky, Peter Symons.

A Duo Show by the Creators of 18 Rabbit Gallery.

FT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA - May 14 through June 24, 2010.

Opening Reception: May 14 from 6-9 pm. Free and Open to the Public.

In what will be the last exhibition of 18 Rabbit Gallery at its' present location, Leah Brown and Peter Symons will be exhibiting works in two themes: Brown's series, "These Woods" and Symons' series, "This Sky".

For "These Woods", Brown has created a series of life-sized, mixed-media figures based around the intersection of memory and dream. They are the denizens of  a recurring dreamscape rooted in the forests of the Appalachian Mountains where Brown grew up. Strongly influenced by childhood experiences with the fauna of the region, folklore and fairytales, these figurations become both symbols of our animal nature as well as revealing their own personalities through posture and proximity.

In "This Sky", Symons processes image and object through digital and analogue filters. Symons examines the body as object, while at the same time examining other bodies, the asteroids that threaten the Earth, creating a relationship between terrestrial and celestial bodies.    Subtle and precise, Symons' experimentations with digital fabrication techniques such as laser-engraving shrink-wrap and CNC Routing slivers of the human form, produce objects that are ethereal and thought-provoking.

Brown and Symons met at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2000 where they both received BFAs in Sculpture. They have continued to work both individually and collaboratively, exhibiting throughout the US, attending residencies, living NYC where Symons received his MFA from Pratt, and have since moved to South Florida where they founded the contemporary art exhibition space, 18 Rabbit Gallery. Most recently their work was featured in Showtel 8, with the collaborative installation, Sutherland.

Note: This show contains depictions of nudity. Parents are encouraged to view the work first before deciding if it is age-appropriate for their children.
